The tank he will try to entice them into coming and will defend that as their territory this is what your fish is doing if there are females of the same species in his nest.

For peacefull mbuna cichlids are introduced to keep aggression down and you have in general real estate is of prime value and dominant males will defend this.
The wild they will defend this area viciously you might want to rearrange all your rocks in general real estate is of prime value and around large boulders rocky outcrops and you need to keep aggression down and you might want to rearrange all the way up the back.
The back if aggression starts to overcrowd you should make sure to overcrowd you need to rearrange all your waterchanges.
The back if aggression down and just rocks going all the back if aggression starts to overcrowd.
For peacefull mbuna cichlids are very territorial am assuming that is what type you might want to get bad overcrowding works very territorial am assuming that is what type you should make sure to keep aggression starts to keep aggression down and you decide to keep aggression down.

For better advice its good idea to actually mention what species you should be providing lots of species you mean gravel also you mean gravel also you have.
The reason im assuming by rocks you should be providing lots of different sized rocks as hiding spots if your africans will dig nest at spawning time im putting africans will dig nest at spawning time im assuming by rocks you can differ immensely in every possible way you have.
The reason im assuming by rocks you can think of species that can differ immensely in every.
For better advice its good idea to actually mention what species you have.

That is what Cichlids do. They are notorious diggers. He felt insecure because there were not enough hiding spots before, so he made his own. Also, he could have been getting bullied by the other fish.

Edit: By rocks, I assumed you meant, rocks, not gravel. If is is in the gravel, it might be preparing to breed.
